Hi folks i could find a store full of nice (and shallow) 1 unit rack pc cases
http://www.xcase.co.uk/ but the question is:where can i find a flat cpu cooler to fit on and can put the top of the case at the same time? everything i found is taller than the case, any advice?

You can go with something like this (http://www.rackmount.com/Rackacc/CPU-Coolers/CPU-LGA775-P0.htm).

The problem with 1U cases is that you'll need a few fans that will have to spin faster (faster=noisier) than those in a 2U, 3U or 4U case.

Is the need for a 1U case being driven by the need for mobility or do you just want to save rack space in the studio?

both reasons are true, portability and smaller rack system for mobility.

Make sure you look at depth too. Most 1u cases are not exactly shallow. I would rather have a 2u pc 16" to 18" deep that fits in a standard size case than a 1u pc that extends for 24" or more.

I've described my solution to 1U cooling before here, search the forum for 'crossflow', that will return several posts where I describe what I did in the responses. It has worked flawlessly for me, it's what I use constantly. The cases I use are 14" deep. The whole assembly ends up 2 rack spaces tall, but only in the back, the front is clear of obstructions for enough depth to easily allow a 7" depth unit and it's connectors to live in the space above the computer...I put a MOTU 2408 there ;)

If you want to go this route and need more detailed explanations, I will be happy to help.
