Does anyone have a really good mp3 ripper and jukebox program? I would like to get all my CDs onto the HD using MP3 256 encoding with a program that has a really flexible playlist selection catalog, which could be sorted by composition, composer, artist in any order. I hope that something like that exists. I've done quite a bit of research already and found nothing that filled the bill.

Ogg Vorbis (sp?) would be another really good format to use, but programs that can deal with that are even more rare.

Windows media player will do it in WMA, which certainly superior to mp3 in the latest wma incarnation.

You could also rip to wav with WMP then use dbpoweramp to convert the whole collection to ogg or mp3 as you wish.

I use Creative MediaSource Player on one of my boxes. It sounds like it does what you want, ie - good mp3 ripping and very extensive playlist capabilities.
I think it's downloadable from the Creative Labs website.

I just checked with the Creative MediaSource Player. It can convert to mp3 at up to 320 kbps.
Just the last piece of info you were asking about..... :)

Take a look at JetAudio, seems to work pretty good.

Once everything is converted, there are a number of open source PHP programs that'll do the jukebox / organization stuff you're looking for...
That means you need a web server running PHP - though.

I'm using JetAudio to convert my tracks to .wma as the first step prep for WeedShare. I'm also evaluating some of the PHP scripts for serving up a lot of Weed files in some kind of organized/searchable fashion.

It'd sure be cool if LACE could roll off to .wma and do all the meta data stuff. As it is, I'm using both JetAudio and Windows Media Player to complete the preparation.

Big announcment!
I (Digital Dexterity Records) am now a WeedShare Independent Content Provider (ICP). So, if you know anybody that has some tracks they'd like
to get "Weedified", send 'em my way.

There is a plugin for Media Player v9 and below fanatics that want MP3 conversion, I think they went ahead and allowed straight to MP3 in v10.

AudioGrabber is now freeware:
http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

EAC can prolly do it too:
www.exactaudiocopy.de

Cataloging it all is another story...
I just rip them by
d:\mp3s\Artistname\Album\artistname-album-tracknum-songname.mp3

The free dbPowerAmp software also installs a great CD ripper... extremely fast and picks up on any CD text on the disc and auto names the files.

You can rip directly to wav or mp3 or whatever codecs are installed.

Its linked on the Misc Downloads page of the SAWStudio site.

Try FLAC format

offers 50 % compresion without loose quality

when you codec to an MP3 loose a lot of info that never recovered when decode again in WAV.

Not in FLAC .....when you decode again in WAV from a FLAC archive you get identical previuos WAV

just for sending wavs in a RAR archive or storage

Like my friend Texvo Says

50% is a good percenteage.....

He makes a good free VST plugins .....Elogoxa plugs

take a look.......

Hi Tomasino,

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you further explain what is this...? :o

Jon,

I rip with EAC and encode either with EAC right away or dBpoweramp. I find WinAmp's library pretty slick and it's for free. Another library to try out is iTunes from Apple.

A library only works good if you maintain your filenames and MP3 tags. The most amazing tool for tagging and organizing MP3 files I found is "The Godfather" at http://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/. It does so much naming/renaming/tagging/retrieval from the net it's really helpful.

Best regards,
Veit

Hi Tomasino,

Basically, its a .wma encoding scheme that allows the downloader to play the file 3x free, then they gotta buy.

Really not that big a whoop.

Check it out at www.weedshare.com - its all explained there.

Hi all,

Many thanks to all of you for the wonderful suggestions. I am looking at all of them and evaluating how to proceed. Needless to say it is quite time comsuming, but the end result will be worth it. It is also time consuming to transfer all the CDs to HD, so I want to be sure that I will be satisfied with the result.

So far here are my findings. On classical music I can tell the difference between the highest resolution of MP3 and the original wave. The difference is mainly in depth and stability of the stereo image. If I'm going to use this as my primary listening source, that is unacceptable. With FLAC I can tell no difference at all. I have yet to test Ogg Vorbis.

On non-classical I can't really perceive a difference, so MP3 is ok there. I see a mixture of FLAC or wav files along with MP3 as the final solution.

Thanks again. Now on with the testing...

Regards,
Jon

I've been using the LAMEfe program with great success. I really dig the LAME encoding scheme, VBR is great. Drop in a disc, it'll grab the info/titles/track # from the net, rip the disc, and encode, then drop it in it's own directory.

Check it out at:

Hi Jon,

I did some hearing tests on the quality of MP3 compression and came to the conclusion that (only with non-audiophile material) 192 Kbps is good so that I couldn't hear the difference any more.

I'm currently transferring a major amount of vinyl for archiving pupouses and decided to go @ 224 Kbps. So far no problems.
