AVB (Audio/Video Bridging) IEEE spec, no licensing for time critical networked audio. Bringing inexpensive remote stage boxes and audio cards in the semi-near future?

Audinate PCIe Dante 128x128 audio card "low-latency" with no real info on what "low-latency" means.

my guess is it'll only be as good as the OS its running on.

I've been doing some reading up on 802.1 AVB and I really think that it's where things are headed. I can see it being an open standard that's going to get a lot of attention.

Regarding "low latency", this article (http://www.prosoundnewseurope.com/main-content/full/osa-achieves-first-real-world-test-of-ieee-802-1-avb-bridging) reports "AVB-induced latency is reported to have been less than 500 microseconds for all devices, while the delay from input to output maintained the <2ms specified by the AVB protocol"

That seems that it would be low enough for real time use.

SAC + 802.1 AVB could mean remotely controllable/recallable preamps plus all sorts of goodness.

Yup... we met with a dozen companies at InfoComm discussing the possibility of mic pre boxes direct to ethernet... no soundcards needed... it could happen soon.

Some pretty expensive... some pretty reasonable... nothing concrete to give out... it's still just ideas in the works.

Would this be using 802.1 AVB?

If no sound card is needed, will there be something like an 802.1 AVB broker on the host that interacts with SAC or something along those lines?

Could this also bring the possibility of having a truly redundant SAC system where there could be multiple hosts running SAC mix engines that are kept in sync?

Could all be interesting... the SAC journey has just begun... the ride is going to get pretty wild from here.

Bob,

Did you ever get the source code for the Momentum networking solution (from Proco). I remember a while ago that you were discussing the possibility of partnering to make it a SAC native compatible protocol.
Any news?

Nothing has come of the ProCo interaction yet.

I have one of the Dante Yamaha cards in an 01V96 - but I've just installed and only dipped my foot in lightly so far. But, the virtual sound card so far is working very well on the Mac side. I've got an iMac and have no difficulty with 16 in/out to the O1V96 - just directly connected at the moment. I don't see any reason that it would not work as well on the PC side - I do know that the drivers do not yet support 64 Bit Vista - because that's why the card I bought was returned to the dealer enabling me to get a bit off the top on the purchase :).

I will be getting a second license for the virtual sound card to run on one of our PCs, or to try on my boot-camp partition on one of the Macs, but probably not for a month or two.

The Link stage box is kind of pricy - but Allan & Heath are supporting Dante also - time will tell. I went for the card now because it was a very inexpensive way to connect my iMac playback system to the 01V96 (just over $500 for the Yamaha card)
