Can I take the HD out (with Win 7) and put it in another computer and be able to boot from it? I would be completely removing the HD from the second machine. Reason: The machine with Win7 only has PCI slots. The machine currently running XP has PCIe. I just purchased a MOTU 2408 (PCIe) and want to run my system in Win7. Your help id always appreciated.

You can and it will probably boot, but you'll probably have to install a bunch of drivers for the onboard devices of the new machine.

Ah Junk! What about adding the HDD w/Win7 to the second machine leaving the XP HDD in? How would you change which HDD is booted from, if this is a possibility?

Keeping it as a 2nd drive should work fine. Just set the drive boot order in the BIOS.

Thanks a bunch 905! Are there any disadvantages to doing it this way?

I think you'll still have to add the drivers to the Win7 disk. Win7 won't know that they are sitting on the XP disk. And they may not be the same drivers for the new OS, either.

Make sure you have your Win7 Product Key...you will have to (re-)activate the OS when you move the HDD to the new machine.

Hello,

I would not recommend activating WIN7 right away...you have 30 days to do this. This is to ensure that all is working as it should before doing so.

Ah Junk...again! What are my options for converting a PCIe slot to a PCI card (my old MOTU card 324)?

Do you want to boot to both OS's? If this is true, then you could use a boot manager to do this. If not, then, you will need to install new drivers for THAT system. Make sure you DO have WIN7 drviers for THAT system first.

However, this is NOT a recommended procedure. You should really do a clean install of WIN7 on the system with PCI-E.

Hope this makes sense and helps?

Thanks all and thanks Dave, Ordered and on the way. Seems like the easiest option for now. New MOTU will just have to go in the new system I am building. Ah Shucks...

Disclaimer: I've never used one of those adapters, nor do I know anything about them. Just did a quick Google. Hope it works for you, though!
