One of the main points I take away from this is that steep Crossover slopes are bad. Unfortunately...Pat doesn't quantify what a steep slope is? Any idea what he's recommending? I currently use 24db between my Mid hi boxes and subs.

I think that "steep" starts around 48 dB/Oct.
Just my opinion.
When you get beyond that (or maybe the problem starts at 48 dB/oct, I don't recall), you start having problems with phasing in crossovers and the design has to be careful to avoid problems.

Steep slope is warranted for HPF on sub, IMO, to help prevent over-excursion.

A 24db/oct is generally sufficient to help reduce over excursion. That wouldn't fall into the steep category.
