Two questions:

One: I backup my audio surce files regularly, but I ZIP them to save space on the backup drive. Will ZIPing them degrade the sound or integrity of the data?

Two, related: If I defrag my hard drive that has all the audio files and projects, with the defrag process screw up or otherwise degrade the audio info?

Thanks.

No is the answer to both questions.

Defragging (if it works properly) makes exact copies of the file data... and the zip process does the same... both are non-lossy processes.

To compress audio for archival, I suggest using winrar instead.

Not only is it generally faster than zip, it compresses audio much better. In nearly every case, better than flac or monkey audio!

I've used winrar from time to time and had no problems with it.

RAR is also one of the most robust compression algos on the market.
The WinRAR client is excellent. Totally recommended!

I agree - much better than any other compression app, for audio, that I've seen!
