I would like to record to an AVI file a :30 commercial I produced which is currently on DVD.

How do I do that?

Currently I have:
1. Cyberlink Power DVD 6 Deluxe
2. Roxio Creator 7 Basic DVD (host of programs/utilities)
3. Plextools
4. Riverpast Converter
5. SawStudio
6. Soundforge6

Hopefully, I can do this inside the computer with the DVD-Rom player, rather than externally playing it out of a DVD - recapturing thru firewire.
Ideas?

Carl - you'll probably need to use a ripper for this job.
DVD decrypter would be the best, though it's getting harder to find now that movie heavies have stomped on the writer. It's freeware.

Then turn the result of the rip into AVI with Auto Gordian Knot.

You'll find AGK at http://www.autogk.me.uk/

DVD decrypter at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

If my memory serves me, you need to rip the DVD in IFO mode to be useable in AGK.

Good luck

I have never yet found a good utility for this, even though there are many mpeg converters that convert to DIVX format... I want the high quality of a straight DV format.

I have resorted to playback from an external DVD player thru my Firewire converter box for many commercial DVDs....

But, I have found success many times on non-commercial DVD copies by using the SAWStudio Video Track viewer directly to read the VOB file.

VOB file seeking may or may not work well thru the regular DirectShow functions that the viewer uses, depending on how the file was transcoded and burned... but here is how to try...

Open the video Viewer... use the Open Video File command to search the DVD VIDEO_TS folder for the VOB file(s)... you will have to change the extension dropdown in the open file dialog to be ALL FILES to see the VOB extensions.

If you are lucky... the file will open thru one of your MPEG2 Codecs and seek... possibly very slowly... but if it does seek and you can get a picture onscreen (give it a minute or so)... then you can use the Convert option to convert directly to a DV Type 1 or 2 file...

This has worked fine for many DVDs... and not worked at all for others... but its a good option to have in your arsenal of tools.

Wow! That's great to know!
Unfortunately, this was a national spot and on a commercial DVD.
Using Video Viewer as you suggested opens up greater possibilities for stuff I've archived to DVD already. Thanks!

Well, you should still try it and see if it will open and seek... if so... you can lift it directly.

AWESOME! Totally! Totally Totally!
I found...
1. Open VOB (on HD)
2. Select Clip desired from the Edit Mode in VV
3. Convert Clip to AVI 2 (with Audio)
4. Bring new AVI 2 into SS as usual.

Totally Awesome!
....One thing....
I notice some of the video... has noticeable horizontal line smear with horizontal movement of screen subject on some commerciales...but other sections of the video (same file) are absolutely perfect. In Cyberlink PowerDVD same sections don't show that smear. If this is a codec selection process..if I have several on my machine that all do the same job...Is there a way I can point VV to a different Codec? (to lesson the horizontal line smear on horizontal movement...of only some types of video)

Carl,

Sometimes you can drag 'n' drop the VOB file right into SoundForge, then save as an AVI; though I'm using SF 8.

Yeah, I have SoundForge... trouble is... I don't like it!
To me, it's great for some conversions though and a few plugins.

Carl,

I have DVD Ripper from ImToo Software Studio http://www.ImToo.com/ and it works well and is easy to use. They have a demo version that will will rip a short portion of the DVD. The full version is $35.00.

My Firefox download manager, even after altering it like Doom9.org says, doesn't download the file. hmmmmm.
Doesn't work in IE either.
