Assuming there are no SCSI ID conflicts, is it possible to connect (bridge) two SCSI controllers (say, 2940's or 29160's) together via their external connectors?

Thanks.

David, I've never seen this done. Why would you need to? It doesn't allow any extra devices. Are you attempting to make something resilient? I doubt if it will work, but I've never tried. The controllers needs their own IDs, but hypothetically they could be set to different numbers. But you'd never get a hard disk to respond properly to two controllers both trying to access it. I get a bad feeling about the approach (if I've understood it).

Picture a PC host with a SCSI disk subsystem and an external drive expansion box with its own controller. Pretty standard setup for movie editing systems that need terabytes (e.g. AVID systems).

Yea, you can do that . Especially if you've got matching controllers. They're in the same class, speak the same language and match transfer rates etc...

Just gotta be mindful of the rules for the SCSI chain, SCSI ID's, drive ID's and terminations n' all that. I don't think you'll be able to get past 30 drives, (considering the two controller ID's).

A bit more complicated with two different controllers but still possible.
I'd review the rules of SCSI before the first attempt or buying anything.

A bit of a tweak. I'd rather go surfing!

Yeah, I did some googling after posting here and eventually found some info on this. It took some digging but buried in the slashdot forums was confirmation. Amazing how controversial it is. (I may try it just to say I can :p)

After giving it more thought, I'm not sure I can justify the experiment... I do have everything I need, matching 29160's (or 2940's), drives, cables etc. Besides setting the ID's to 7 and say, 6; and setting up LUN's for the drives on the secondary controller, I'm guessing I need to disable the Bios on it also. Not sure what else I need to disable...

We'll see, maybe a project for a rainy day.

Thanks guys!
