That is, if I open a session and change to a different layer on a track and then exit the program, I'm not prompted to update the session. I'd like to be. Should I be?

Dave,

I've noticed that there are things that don't require an EDL update. When you change layers, you really haven't changed he EDL, just the way you're looking at it. Copy something to another layer and watch that flag wave like the dickens!

Not every operation is flagged... too anoying actually... I like the ability to move around a session and get out, knowing I didn't damage it and not be prompted.

I would say to get in the habit of saving and updating everytime you do something you know you want to keep... or if you like coming back to where you were everytime you get out, then save and update whether you are prompted or not. No real damage done.

There's always the * key right?

Timestamp's nice. :)

There's always the Ctrl-S key for a quick and clean update of the current session also. :)
