I personally use CD Baby and have been enormously happy with their service - they have consistenly shown a level of excellence that is hard to beat. Tunecore doesn't take 9% off of the top like CD Baby does so this might work better for you.

Selling the tracks is easy, delivering them is the tricky part, are you looking for a way to deliver instant downloads of your tracks and have people pay online?

Yes but it's only possible with paypal without instant delivery or the other solutions are expensive.

I recently heard a friend of mine mention "Google Checkout" or something like that as a payment processing alternative to Paypal. I have not researched it yet...

I use PayLoadz (http://www.payloadz.com)to sell tracks. It works with PayPal (http://www.paypal.com)and I'm pretty sure you need an account there to use payloadz. if you sell less than $100/month it's free..

CDBaby is great for selling hardcopy of CD's. You can actually only do the digital distribution..check the "digital distribution" faq.

TuneCore (http://www.tunecore.com)is excellent for accessing the digital marketplace. they have fewer outlets than cdbaby (only the major places) but if you do sell, they are much cheaper.

Vincent -

I had a quick look at your myspace site and it looks like you are gigging mainly in Belgium and France, is that right?

I'm going to offer another approach - think local.

Firstly I'd observe how other small labels and independent artists are promoting their music in the region (Belgium and beyond). I'd just talk to people and call people and ask them what they are doing and what kind of success they are having.

A service like CD baby [ based in Oregon ] can work extremely well for artists who are already touring the States on a regular basis, who are already generating interest in US based blogs, forums, magazines etc. For many independent artists - no matter the genre - it's live shows that sell the CDs (not the other way around). For artists with a good profile in the US scene(s), a page on CD Baby simply reinforces what is already happening on the ground.

If you follow the same marketing logic, then looking for a service in Belgium / France that can promote and sell your music (for download) could put you in great position to build up sales based on interest from your local / regional audience. That could be a great starting point for building your empire. :)

I was at a friend's place today and noticed that the September issue of Sound On Sound magazine - http://www.soundonsound.com/ - had a large nice front cover feature article on this exact subject - might be worth picking up for some more ideas.

Ok Andre, You recommend me to begin with a french partner like http://fr.neomusicstore.com/ who would allow me to sell my own music on myspace and my Website (Belgium, France, ...).

But, TuneCore would allow me to sell my tracks in iTunes store, music.com, ... too. Then, an imprortant question : is it possible to sell my own music on my Website with Neomusicstore (Not exclusive rights) and in iTunes store with TuneCore without having problems ?

Right ... you might not be able to use both services at the same time with the same material. That's for you to research. SABAM / SACEM and other related organizations might have some useful info about this, with annotated examples of DD agreements commonly used in Europe.

It could also be valuable to think about what your existing audience wants. Do they want to download stuff from iTunes? Maybe not! There are artists (and their fans) who refuse to use iTunes for ideological reasons. Maybe they would prefer to use an independent distribution service, that's French speaking. Ask them. That's important too! ;)
