Would any of you guys like to share your thoughts on compression on kick and snare. If you have a mix template for say bass & drums. I use 7 mics on drums ,kick, snare. 3 toms, 2 overheads. Where do you set your mix template for your average session, attack and release times on kick and snare?? Also do you compress before going in?
thanks

I thought you would have gotten some replies on this Kimbo!

You pretty much know what I do from having been here.... but here goes: no compression on kick or snare on print; sometimes I'll use a compressor on the snare on mix if I want to change the attack characteristic. Care must be taken not to suck the life out of the drum, and also you must watch that you don't pull up the hat or overheads or other "nasties" with too much compression or too slow a release. I will very rarely compress the kick unless the drummer was too inconsistent with his level (unless it's a jazz drummer... then I leave it as played).

Mostly I use SAW's onboard compressor.

For BIG drums I just found this FREE comp/limiter TLs-2096-LA it rocks IMO , I put it across the 2 buss for kik and snare only !! for the BIG sound , if you want natural use SS comp.

There are many, many technics to doing drums.
Here is one tutorial done in FP but the same can be done in SS.
MutantAudio Video (http://www.mutantaudio.net/tutorials/parallel_compression_tutorial/parallel_compression_tutorial_ma.html)

This link you can hear another examples of Fattening up drums done by a Logic group.

Parallel compression for fatter drum tones (http://www.hometracked.com/2007/03/31/parallel-compression-for-fatter-drum-tones/)

Watch out. You can get yourself into all kinds of ear fatigue.
