I've been staying with QuickTime 6 on my DAW because of problems with 7 (that I can't actually recall in any detail). I've been using QT 7 on my notebook for the times when 6 won't cut it. A bit of a PITA to move stuff over the network repeatedly on certain projects.

What's the current thinking? Is 7 still sucky?

QT 7 has been good for a while. Remember, if you have the Pro version, you will have to buy it again if you move from 6 to 7.

MM

I went Pro just as 7 came out and it was a PITA then but has been behaving for a long time now. But ... I don't TRY to break my toys like some.

My problem with QT7 turns out to be that my RME soundcard (Digi96PAD) doesn't like low res audio. I have it set now to work with the Realtek MB sound and it never has a problem...the newer HDSP9632 works fine with QT7

Instead use "Quicktime Alternative" (google it).
You'll be happy you did.

Ever since the latest upgrade of ITUNES and QuickTime, I have had nothing but audio problems. Audio interruptions with static etc. Winamp works just fine, but playing audio from my normal lib and my hard drives suck.

Can't remember if I've asked this before, but does the Quicktime Alternative set include codecs for mp4 and H264? The vast majority of Quicktime files sent to me by video editors are in these formats.

This is my issue. Plus, I like some of the features in the QT Pro version that QT alternative doesn't have (so far as I know), like file conversions.

I tried to play an MOV (H.264) file that someone sent me the other day. Plays in QT 7 on my laptop, but trying it in QT 6 on my desktop system or in QT Alternative (Media Player Classic) gives audio (skipping, in QT 6) but no video, and a prompt that says there's no codec available.

I just tried playing an MP4 (that I'd created in QT 7). In QT 6 I get a bunch of error prompts, then it plays, but with audio drop-outs and loss of sync. In Media Player Classic, it plays fine, but it's stretched to a wider-than-it's-supposed-to aspect ratio for no apparent reason.

Here's an interesting discovery (for me, anyway): both the H.264 MOV and the MP4 play fine in WMP 11.

Don't know about MP4s.
Thanks, Dave. Guess we're kinda stuck with Apple for the time being.

That is interesting. But how does that help us convert those files into DV AVI files that SAW can use? WMP has no export or conversion options, does it? Of course, if WMP can play those Apple files, it must have a codec in the system somewhere, right? I wonder if we could find and manipulate that codec to work for SAW (and Vegas, in my case) and dump QT? They may be in some WMP proprietary format, though.

If there is a DirectShow codec version in the system, most likely the SS video viewer may be able to open and convert the files.

WMP generally uses DirectShow codecs.

If not... use the ffDshow codec pack you can find on the web... it works great and allows SS to open many video formats.

BTW Dave, did you heard the one about Enzyte being taken off the shelves in the near future?

That ffdshow deal sure is a Swiss Army Knife. I'll have to give a look turning that stuff on for SAW. :)

No, what's the punch line? :p

Is this really true?

I may have to become a SAWStudio VIP to replace that income stream! :p

Which version of ffDshow is recommended? ffdshow-20041012.exe (2,745,475 downloads), ffdshow-20041012-sse.exe (760,280 downloads), or ffdshow-20041012-sse2.exe (527,817 downloads).

I'm thinking it depends on system performance but not sure. Thanks.

Ya got me. I just picked one. IIRC, my thinking was that less is more. Aren't some of the versions smaller (fewer codecs) than others? Sorry, I don't remember.
