I am thinking for smaller personal gigs requiring 8 channels or less of a Laptop and RME audio device. I need a new laptop, so I curious what buffers people are using reliably on laptop specs.

With an RME cardbus or the new PCXpress card my laptops have been getting 2 x 64 reliably.

3 x 64 is rock solid for me and I am about to try 2 x 64.

For only 8 channels you might try a USB - FastTrackUltra 8R from M'Audio
Octane mic pres and 4X64 on my laptop very stable.

I can't recommend the Fast Track Ultra 8R myself - mic pres have all the gain in the last 10% of travel. Very annoying. They seem quiet and hiss free because they have no gain most of the way. 'Award Winning' can cover a multitude of sins.

Must be the "Behringer" syndrome, mine seem fine. I really didn't get to fully test it though. A buddy of mine bought a Firewire 2626 from me and tried it with his Presonus stuff and claims the difference in the mic pres were too close to be of any consequence. And he is pretty picky on the stuff he lays out money on.
