For a while now, I have been keeping two "classes" of CD blanks in stock at my studio. For "ordinary" stuff copied mainly for quick convenience, and for "roughs" after a session, I use whatever cheap stuff I find at Staples.

For final masters and other Really Important stuff, I have been keeping the HHb CDR74 Gold blanks. I don't use them often, so my stock has lasted a long time. Lately, though, I have been needing them more often, and I don't even know if those particular blanks are still available.

What are the current "mastering grade" blanks of choice, and where and how do I get them?

Last batch of HHB Gold's I saw were poor quality - you could see through them when you held them up to the light.

I've gotten very consistent results (tested via Plextools Pro) for Taiyo Yuden silver/blue 52x compatible media. Most mastering engineers I know also use these.

There has been so much change in the CDR industry the past couple years with regards to media quality...it's definately not what it was. Still, the Taiyo Yuden silver/blue 52x CDR's do seem to be pretty good. I wish my customers were ok with having their short-run jobs done on them. Almost all of them want the silver/silver disks which are not as good in the long run for data retention (or so the vendors tell me...all mine seem to be ok though I don't use them for critical data)

Taiyo still seems to be the one at the top.

Where and how do I get them??

I've found good pricing and service from http://www.meritline.com - I usually buy silver top inkjet printables in bulk spindles.

Do a Google and you'll find a good number of other places that sell Taiyo Yuden media as well.

Best regards,

Another vote for Taiyo Yuden. I've been using their inkjet printable DVD's for about the last four or five years. I can't think of a single time I've ever ended up with a coaster.

I do my bulk CD orders from http://www.tapes.com/, ironic as it is (National Recording Supplies is the company). Call for best pricing. Our church has had a commercial account with them since we actually did order tapes, before the digital days.
