Re: Muting Options at Mics
You can assign your inputs to multiple channels in SAC, no need to do an external split.
It may be possible to do option 1 with scenes without full FOH rights??
Re: Muting Options at Mics
your option 3-
momentary DPDT stomp switches at each pertinent mike making a split
for the normal out to the system and one to the BTB system [when stood on]
which all link parallel to a single line
it does require one AD input which
would then be assigned only to monitors
and the ability to step on something and speak simultaneously
[save the bass player jokes...]
yes
it's a hardware solution
but they are simple to build/maintain
and if included in your stage looming are a minimal
impact to load in/out
and most importantly
they are muso proof as far as your house mix goes...
i'v seen the switches available commercially
if you dont have someone willing to construct them
this is not from my brain
various designs are in service world wide
yes it requires a few steps but
IMWO one or two dedicated BTB mics is a much better solution
than switching the lead vocal mic line during a performance

BTB band talk back
DPDT double pole double throw
Re: Muting Options at Mics
Ahhhh - lightbulb just went and flickered on -
linking them into one input eluded me.... a momentary switch removes the need for any indicator light on the stompbox..... and a dedicated talkback channel - allows one player to have a vocal mic muted in their ears but then when the mutee needs to talk to the band ensures they are heard....
thank you much

Re: Muting Options at Mics
it would appear that the switch is push on push off as opposed
to momentary
i'd suggest you process the monitor signal in some way
so it does not sound like the FOH line
[pitch shift, slight delay, weird EQ ... something]
the possibility exists that a missed switch could lead to
a singer happily starting a song that no one in the house is hearing

Re: Muting Options at Mics
On some shows we have a wireless clip on mic that we give to the band leader /music director. This is routed into the monitor console and setup to feed all of the IEM mixes. When the director needs to call the band he just switches it on and he can talk to them. This doesn't readily allow talk back but in the shows that I am on there is only one "VOG" or director so this works out great. We usually have an additional mic at stage side L or R for the manager to talk to the band leader when necessary. Of course these microphones are never routed to the FOH.

while i'v never seen it cause a show to go awry
i have seen BTB use get out of hand occasionally
when it's easy for musos to access...
as a monitor engineer it's tempting to
mute the system once in a while
especially dealing with the "bit more-bit less all nite long" syndrome
i have actually told a couple of cats
to "shut up and play" when the boss
turns around with that really annoyed look

I agree; the band has to have discipline if they are going to talk to each other. I get tired of waiting for them to decide what to play. Fortunately most of my acts are pros and they now how to work. This is one of the reasons why I give them only one mic for a music director / leader to use as this will cut out all of the chatter.
Re: Muting Options at Mics
We're about to move our singers to wireless mics and I'm now trying to figure out how to do the stomp box or something similar to mute the FOH signal from the lead singer.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to have this setup so that it uses 2 inputs within SAC. This would be setup so that 1 of the 2 inputs is always muted. So when the main FOH channel is muted, the "iems only" signal is un-muted and vice-versa.
