Something completely different
Every year, in the same time of year ***8211; there is something very strange going on over here in Germany:
Germans try to be funny!
It***8217;s called ***8220;Karneval***8221;, and the first thing Germans do, when they try to have fun, is: Organize!
They gather in a registered association, called ***8220;Karnevalsverein***8221;. Officially these associations are settled to take care of ancient customs. Other might say the only reason for being in a ***8220;Karnevalsverein***8221; is to get seriously drunk. The truth might be in the middle of it.
Anyway***8230;every ***8220;Karnevalsverein***8221; does a event, where some of the members (with the support of some professionals) set up an evening with ***8220;singing, dancing and comedian***8221; performances. This event is called ***8220;Sitzung***8221;. A common ***8220;Sitzung***8221; last at least for six, sometimes up to ten hours. The hired soundguy has to take care of:
+ an insane count of wireless microphones (handheld and head sets)
+ mix the ***8220;house band***8221;, that attends to various singers of the Karnevalsverein
+ manage an insane amount of CD players, iPods and other acient devices for playback music
+ guest bands and other acts, who never ever give you a hind on the wireless frequency***8217;s they are using, when they perform
+ create lots of submixes for additionally rooms
+ operate the beamer
+ calm down the nervous performers of the Karnevalsverein
+ deal with the authorities (like fire marshals and other important people, controlling EVERYTHING). The Boss enemy is the facility manager of course.
Guess what, the last days I did some ***8220;Karnevalssitzung***8221; with my SAC rig.
We did the monitoring with a remote laptop and one BCF2000 and FoH with my laptop SAC rig (all 24 channels in use) and everything went smooth. Even the RF nightmare was easy to tame with SAC. We had six headsets and six handheld mikes. The room was acoustically treated and the pa system was top notch (GAE Waveline line array). Ringing out monitors with the RML analyser is dead easy and even the head sets sounded very good with lot gain before feedback. But one thing was really amazing: I heared one or two really funny jokes this night! I didn***8217;t awaited that***8230;

You people know how to throw a party, it seems.

You've got to be kidding ;)
Re: Something completely different
Being half German myself, I totally enjoy the Monte Python skit about the most dangerous joke in the world. Hearing it caused the listener to die laughing. Developed as an Allied weapon during WWII, even reading a part of it could put you into a coma.
The Germans retaliated with their own version.
"Two peanuts ver valking down der strasse, unt vun vas assalted..........peanut."
For those so inclined, there used to be a "German Joke of the Day" website. Might still be around.
Re: Something completely different
Hey Wurst,
Nice line arrays! Stackable! Wow! Kewl gig...way better than my shows! Put me on the guest list for those. Looks like it's time to do some research....
Re: Something completely different
@Donnie: If you make it one day or another to come over here to Germany, make sure it is end of july;-). Than I can put you on the guestlist for a smaller festival here in my hometown. It's named "Eier mit Speck" ("Eggs with bacon" - the organizer is offering free breakfest for everyone). I'm runnig the FOH, take care of guest mixers and mix all the bands without own sound guy. This year I'm planing to set up my SAC rig additionally to the usual "tec rider mixing madness" gear.
BTW: We have a lot of nice PA manufactorys over here... d&b and GAE are just two of them. Last Years we used the bigger GAE Waveline for "Eier mit Speck", this year we will switch to AD System-->

Re: Something completely different
Both GAE and AD-Systems speakers seems like nice boxes. How do they compare to d&b on sound, build quality and price?
We have a lot of d&b here in Denmark, but I have not even heard about the other manufactures before so I'm a bit curious!
Best regards Peter Olsen.
Re: Something completely different
Hi Peter,
GAE is imho the Rock'n'Roll offspring to d&b. Tough GAE uses smaller speakers
d&b Q series = 2x 10" vs. GAE Waveline PT = 2x 6,5"
d&B J Series = 2x 12" vs. GAE Waveline = 2x 10"
the GAE gear offers more SPL max. Soundwise the d&b stuff is quite "HiFi-like" and often preffered by soundguys, that also do a lot of studio work. EQwise you can do a lot of boosting, without producing a annoying sound. GAE is different soundwise, due to other taste of the developer. It has lots of low mids (even the small PT Waveline) and a touch of bite. So creating a "fat snare" and "heavy guitars" is no problem. The build quality of the GAE stuff is top notch, it holds up to the d&b stuff and it is not that pricey. I like both brands, the d&b stuff is easy to get a decent sound with. You have to try hard to make it sound bad...but the price of for example a d&b Q1 Tops is frightfully expensive, particulay if you consider, what's "inside" the box.
Two 10" B&C speakers, one 1,5 B&C HF Driver (I'm quite sure, it is the same driver, that's build in the GAE PT too) and a Limmer Horn. The HF Driver runs with a build in passiv crossover (very simple build...no allpasses f.e.). Altogether a material price about 500-600,- Euros, but they sell it for 4.000,- Euros:eek:. "The d&b Sound" is mostly done within the controllersetup of the D12 amp and not by the speakers themselves.
Over here in Germany we got lot of car brands, beer brands and every 2nd German is a PA designer. Here is a list of just some (!) professional German PA brands:

Re: Something completely different
I know only 3 of the brands on your list! Maybe I should arrange a trip south of the border to check out some of the speakers I have never heard (of).
It definitely looks like TW Audio, GAE and others a doing fine stuff. But pictures and words on websites can be deceiving, so I'm itching to actually hear some of the boxes.
Best regards Peter Olsen.
Re: Something completely different
Maybe join the Musikmesse in Frankfurt-->
http://musik.messefrankfurt.com/fran...n/erleben.html
Most of the listeted PA manufactories will be there and there is an outside listen area, where you hear some of these pa systems first hand. Imho the TW Audio demonstration was quite impressive last year.
No danish pa systems? What about MACH AUDIO? Are they still on the market?
Christian
Re: Something completely different
A trip to Frankfurt is definitely a possibility - thanks for reminding me!
I don't think MACH AUDIO is on the market any more. If they are, they are keeping a very low profile...
Best regards Peter Olsen.
