Hi
Since I can't use live mode recording with the Nigel guitar amp plug in SAW, I need a decent VST guitar amp simulator plugin.
Anyone had experience with any good ones?

Have you seen the new voxengo amp sim it´s free, so there´s nothing to loose.
I have amplitube, sound okay, but i do prefer a real amp with a real mic.
You might want to check this out ? :

Maybe just a Line 6 pod would work for you ???
I'm suprised that you can't get the UAD-1 card to work with Nigel ??? what were you using before that you had it working ??

A nice thread on exactly this entitled "The Complete VST Amp Sim List!" with a ton of links and reviews can be found at

I use Blood Overdrive and Little Green Machine II VST freeware on occasion but both of these have been discontinued.
Sometimes I use the AIPL Warmtone DX plug to get some overdrive too.
The Simuanalog freeware plugins work great for some stuff too - but you'll need a wrapper (like the SAWPro VST Linker via the JMS FX2 Linker - or Spina Audio's VST Skin Rack) to use these in SAWStudio.
Purchasing a small amp (like an old Fender Champ or a new Budda Twinmaster if you have cash - or say a Vox Pathfinder if you don't) and reamping tracks can do some amazing stuff though.
Best regards,
Steve Berson
If you're looking for free, definetly go with the Simualanalog plugs. The JCM900 owns. If you are willing to spend some cash, check out NI's GUitar Rig. Great stuff.
Thanks for the info guys!
I was using Nigel in Cubase SX, and could monitor in realtime. However, SAW will only allow this with a large unusable latency time when monitoring in live mode with any UAD-1 plugs inserted on the channel.
It's a pity, cause Nigel's good to work with.

Have you tried both the VST and Direct X versions of the plugins? I seem to recall that the Direct x versions were more compatible.

I've used several, Amplitube, Cakewalk Amp Sim, Izotope Trash, Warp, and Guitar Rig. I can say without any hesitation that Guitar Rig is the best, with Amplitube second. Amplitube seems to eat up more CPU for some reason, but it has a nice layout, and several nice presets, including several for bass. But Native Instruments Guitar Rig actually blew me away. It has features no other plug-in has, like choice of mic, mic placement, as well as all the amps and knobs, FX etc. It actually made my Nylon sound like a mint PRS. (I know I just commited a sin, but hey, it happened! Whoa! was that lightening?)
The only negative I can say is it takes up the entire screen when it's open, and it's also expensive. I suggest you decide how badly you need it before you whip out your credit card. There are some free ones, and they do some cool things, but nothing, IMO, can compete with Guitar Rig, nor should it for the price.
Good Luck
I have Amplitude LE, but hardly use it, I also have the Little GreenAmp II and use it all the time, while it has been discontinued, it's big brother is still available for 89 dollars..

I just found out about these yesterday, they go for 80 dollars per amp, or 200 dollars for all three, they might be worth a look..
