I use my recorded tracks all the time for "tuning my system to the room" and for getting my monitor mixes dialed in - especially the in-ears. I have not gone as far as duplicating my mixer further...

The benefits of the monitors consoles over using aux's is HUGE - you just have to get your head around it. Assign your monitors mixers to F keys, so you can jump straight to them.

I am using a shuttle 17" LCD, right now I just wrap it in a towel and it fits right on top of the computer in the rack, Keyboard slides in on top. Probably not the best protection...
