    Re: Isolating drums

Somehow I settled on just spacing them at the typical 6 1/2 inch distance, more or less above a point between kick and snare, about 2 feet above the rack tom. I admit this may not be great for mono...

    Re: Isolating drums

You'd have to try the unmatched mics and see. I know an engineer who used overheads on different sides of the kit, like 5 feet apart. So, in that case it probably doesn't matter that they are not...

    Re: Isolating drums

Sorry I missed your question. In my opinion, if the room is good then you'll go for whatever mic sounds best on the kit. If the room is challenging then the mic choice is more about dealing with...

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

Good to know. They have some very creative tools for dynamics, but I only got as far as the traditional compressor, EQ, gate and limiter.

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

Hey Micro. Yeah, got Waves 9 working which includes the IR-L reverb. After I upgrade Levelizer and Midi Workshop I will explore some of the suggested reverb plug-ins....thank you. I want to steer...

    Re: Isolating drums

I think drums and upright bass are at the top of the list of challenging instruments to mic. In recent years, I have been happy with 2 ribbons overhead, a kick, and one snare mic on top. You can...

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

I have the 64 bit SAW running nicely today, doing a simple mix. I am sticking with Win 7 for a bit mostly because it works. I looked around for what 64-bit plug-ins I have that use a non-dongle...

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

I assume that the 64 bit SAW will open a 32-bit edl, but not the other way around? And how many of you guys have moved on to Windows 10? I am still running 7 (64 bit) here.

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

Thanks for the ideas! Just using the IR-L convolution, usually the plate. But, Spazio was what I was mainly using for several years.

    Re: Migrating to 64 bit

Okay, got it. The shell2vst was a zip file with both 32 and 64 bit versions inside. The 64 bit waves plugs (version 9) appear to be working. Thanks.

    Migrating to 64 bit

Hello guys! I hope everyone is doing well. First, a big congratulations to Bob on the 64 bit release!!

I have been distracted from studio work with teaching, grad school, and lots of...

Re: Packed versus Unpacked and Dither

Packed! This has to do with how a 24 bit number is stored in the wav file. I'm not exactly sure what unpacked means here, but packed is what you want and each 24 bit sample will be packed into 3...

    Re: SAW goes "viral"?

Not sure. But, when teaching a C coding class last year, I let a student use his Windows laptop, but some security program would delete the programs that he made without asking. So, maybe there is...

    Re: Tape Saturation?

I'm enjoying your insights guys. I just wanted to say a nice combination for me has been pairing digital recording with ribbon mics. To me they impart something that I like from tape.

Re: Plug-In To Mix Down To mp3?

I use it al the time. Remember to insert it in the final resolution spot on the master output. Then build to fx.

Re: SS & Waves ... marriage made in hell!

It would be great to have a sticky or similar to keep track of what VST plug-ins are working 100%, mostly, or not at all in SAW. After you get past the minor inconvenience of the ShellVST I can't...

Re: SS & Waves ... marriage made in hell!

I too would like to see how Windows 10 and the Shell extraction utility get working....I have not tried it with Windows 10. I am running Windows 7 with Waves 8 Platinum and Waves 9 (CLA Compressors)...

Re: Killer interview with Paul Northfield

This is great stuff especially for a Rush fan. But, the story about the bad batch of tape disintegrating while trying to mix was great too. Thanks!

    Re: Crackle in Levelizer

I agree with Bob. It would be odd for two different compressors with the same parameters to produce the same results. I have actually designed a couple and believe me there is no one way to go...

    Re: RMS value meter reference

I brought up the going by ear method because if you are mastering tracks, you could put them all at exactly the same RMS value (using an offline RMS algorithm and compensating with gain accordingly),...

    Re: RMS value meter reference

I use the Sonoris meter for RMS. The one in the SAW mixer is for peaks. You could also check loudness (offlline) in something equivalent to Wavelab. Or, if you have a reference track you could...
