I am a Microsoft Certified Professional and have had to recover data from a damaged drive before a few times. The best tool if the drive is still functional is called CAINE...it is a forensic recovery tool that ignores deleted partitions or changed boot sectors and reads raw data from the drive.

If the drive is actually not operational there are still a few options. The most common drive problem due to hardware malfunction is the hard drive circuit board getting toasted. You can replace that circuit board, but it HAS to be the exact board...and manufacturers literally change versions and rev numbers VERY often. If you can find a drive manufactured within a month or so of the date yours was you could try replacing the circuit board on the drive....this is nearly always the case when you get the "click, click, click" sound from your drive.
