Thread: Mute Groups

    Default Mute Groups

Is there a way to use Out channels 9-24 as mute groups?
I know I can create latches that will mute everything in the latch group.
However, I need to create several different mute groups with overlapping channels (e.g., on vocals "all but Bob" and "all but Tracy") that I can switch between in order to get stage noise out of the mix when mics aren't being used.

Is there an easy way to do this with SAC? Searching didn't turn up much.
    Thanks,
    Randy Hyde

You should just be able to use each one as your mute group, assigning the inputs you need for "all but Bob" to 9, "all but Tracy" to 10, etc.

You could use Scenes to do this as well.

Yes, if outs 9-24 are group latches (i.e they're not routed to an output) they'll work as you want. I've also found the other channel latches are great until you have overlaps then they don't work.

    Hmmm...
Didn't work when I tried that last night.
Maybe I did something wrong so I will try again tonight.
Still running v2.9 (if that makes any difference).

Setting a Group Latch output should work like a Mute Group. But with one big exception. It won't remember any current Mute settings when you preform a group mute. When you unmute all channels will be unmuted.

Yeah, I know this will cause more ripples in the force here... but on most desks let's say I have channels 1 thru 8 on a mute group. All channels are unmuted. I mute channel 5 at the channel strip. I mute the group. All channels now mute. I unmute the group, all channels are now unmuted, including channel 5. SAC doesn't remember the I had channel 5 muted prior to that group. This can be a pain especially if you have a channel you muted because a mic is broken, popping, someone is throwing up backstage with a wireless on, etc... The only way around it is to use the channel disable for that channel. There are other reasons why it would be helpful to have it remember which channels were muted prior to the group mute and unmute.

I ussually use scenes myself as I am always gun shy of accidentally moving that fader in the Group Latch output and have severe fader moves happen, either full on (really bad) or full off (almost as bad). Scenes still have the same issue however with mutes being remembered.

In my opinion right now there is nothing in SAC that works like a Mute Group really should.

And it gets even worse when you have mute-thru's set as I just found out this Friday.

Scenes would be the way I've done what you're looking for in the past. There isn't an easy way to update multiple scenes though if you want to add an additional vocal channel or something like that. That's where a traditional mute group type of arrangement would be very handy on top of the current latch and scene states.

I think it's pretty telling that all the live oriented digital consoles have retained mute groups despite basic to fancy scene handling and DCA type muting capability like SAC has in latches.

Well, tried it again last night and it worked.
The previous night was either some sort of operator error or yet another issue I cannot seem to duplicate.

They do obviously only work that when when configured as group latches rather than submaster outputs.

Oh, there was no question they were configured as grp latch.
