Interesting, but it doesn't mention that it will handle ADAT optical signals. If it did that, it could be handy for building a splitter for separate FOH and monitor consoles or for building fully redundant systems that allow you to switch from computer A to B with the flip of a switch or two.

Maybe. There is no where that it mentions ADAT in the specs... it just says all formats of SPDIF. Actually it says "S/PDIF support: All TOSlink optical digital audio formats supported" So who knows???

You either have to contact them and find out. If they even know what ADAT optical is. Or just buy one and let us know.

If they're just splitting the light, then it won't matter what the light is carrying. If they're actually reading then re-writing it will matter. They really don't say though.

It isn't splitting the light but it won't be doing anything clever that requires understanding the signal either. My guess is that as long as the electronics are fast enough not to screw up the stream it will work. It will probably work, but whether you want to risk it depends on how cheap they are.

One can only imagine what kind of nasty "ker-chunk" that switch over would sound like in a live system.

If everything was clocked properly... in other words to an external clock, then it really shouldn't be all that much of a pop. Maybe a small click.

When I have built custom playback rigs that used the old Frontier Design's Apache ADAT switcher it would flip back and forth with no noise at all. The playback computers were never in perfect sync so you would get the glitch in the audio by a few samples or so. But very small amounts of clicks or the like. And if it was between sound cues, no one would have known.

Obviously live mixing... different animal. But done correctly, it should not make much noise at all what I've always said about these A/B systems, any small glitch in the audio is certainly better than the alternative right? Considering you would only do it during the show if something hit the fan.
