Control Sac over Cat5

Hello,

Can anyone please give me the best solution to control Sac and Saw over cat5 cable (without using sacremote). I just want try if it will be comfortable to tweak vst plugins on remote. Is it best solution some special adapters (i mean extenders) or somebody know some good programs?
And what about controllers. How i can connect controllers in that way?

For complete control of one computer by another over a LAN, whether wired or wireless, I use VNC or UVNC. The trick is to have a big enough display on the controlling computer (the "viewer" in VNC terms) to see everything. Be aware, however, that depending on how you set up VNC and the speed of the network, there may be a slight delay between operating a control and having the change show up on your remote screen.

I'm using a KVM extender which also has mic and headphone connections. It has worked very well in most situations. I normally don't use a controller, but I have wondered how I would add one. Maybe there are extenders with a "utility" USB connection.

In addition to VNC mentioned here, you have the option of investigating Windows Remote Desktop (only available in Professional versions of Windows IIRC).

I haven't tried to get controllers working in that manner. You could find either a USB over cat5 extender or a long distance MIDI solution. Possibly a MIDI over LAN but again, I've never tested anything like this.

It has VGA but this is just to illustrate the idea. Make note of the maximum resolution in the specs of anything you look at and try to find a DVI solution if you can. If your controller has a USB interface, it *may* work with something like this.

Expect to spend $100 or more going this route.

Gefen are known to have some of the best quality solutions but they are $$$.

- real ethernet (i.e. your network is still working) ('double side' KVM use the CAT cable just as extension wire)

Personally I would just use SAC Remote and then connect in via VNC to tweak any plug ins. That way it splits the load across multiple computers and you don't have to worry about extending USB.

Having said that the best KVM extenders by far are from Gefen.

They are also NOT inexpensive. A typical unit will cost you more than a modest laptop which could run SAC Remote would.

But they do make units that will extend your KVM and allow for USB devices to be extended, not just a keyboard and mouse.

If you're on more of a budget, I recommend hitting up eBay. You'll find some very modest priced units for extending video, usually with audio and then just use a separate unit that can extend USB. Note that many USB extenders are 1.1 only, not 2.0 USB.

I have also had decent luck with the IO Gear units, which are much cheaper than the Gefen, but not nearly as feature rich.

Startech.com also makes very good extender products. I've used them in multiple installs for five or six years now with only one issue (a DOA product). Never had a call back on their stuff. I keep the ST121 equipment in my production video kit for distribution.

Some of the fancier extenders they have are as expensive as the Gefen (and of equal or better quality) but they do have a 500' VGA/USB KVM extender for less than $200 on Newegg.

I've also had good luck with the house brand extenders from MCM. They have a 4 port usb 2.0 extender for $52. That coupled with a $95 startech ST121UTP would give you vga and 4 USB ports for about $150, but would require 2 cat5 cables (a minor compromise IMHO).

After doing the homework on this a couple of years ago, I decided to stick with remote and VNC. My preferred VNC implementation is TightVNC, which has proven stable for years for me.
