    Default OT: Small XLR Headphone Amp

    Hello,

    As my "rig" has no more available room, I am in need of a small XLR - preferable, headphone amp.

    I have seen this one: Fischer Amps Mini Body Pack XLR Headphone Amplifier

    Anyone have any suggestions...

    Much appreciated...or is it, under-appreciated?

    PS: Found these as well,

    Behringer PowerPlay P2

    Hi Dell, I have 4 of the fischer amps units that I sometimes use along with a 4-way rack mount headphone amp for wired in-ears. They are robust and do the job. Don,t know about the rest.

    I use the Rolls PM50S headphone amp as part of my "remote session" rig. It is especially useful for vocal session work, very good for the price. The only XLR connections on it are a microphone loop through for monitoring ("more me"), but I use an adapter cable to come from a return XLR connection on my snake.

    The one caveat is that I modded my unit by putting in higher value output blocking capacitors along with a resistor to ground at the headphone output. In use, I connect power to the unit and turn it on BEFORE plugging in the headphones, wait a few seconds for the output caps to charge up, and that way avoid getting a big turnon thump when plugging in the headphones. The higher capacitor value improves low end response. The stock parts choice was an engineering compromise. I just chose a different compromise that I liked better.

    I really like this unit. It is a very handy tool.

    Hello,

    Thanks to all that replied. Much appreciated as always.

    I believe I have narrowed down my choice to the Behringer MA400.

    It:
    * Has XLR
    * Is a standalone unit - so no USB, installation, and so on.
    * Has a 1/4" input
    * Has a small footprint, 1-5/6" x 4" x 2-1/2"
    * Is inexpensive, about $40.00 CDN

    All that I need this for is for practicing "once-in-awhile".

    It probably doesn't matter at this point since you decided to go with the Behringer unit, but the Fischer box is just a passive volume control NOT a headphone amplifier.

    I have an older version of this and it works well. It doesn't get very loud, but does the job.

    The Behringer unit seems to have the exact same features as the Rolls PM50S, with minor cosmetic differences, and switches in the couple of places where the Rolls unit uses jumpers. I wouldn't be surprised if the design was exactly the same, and if so, you may want to do mods as I did on my Rolls. And yes, the Behringer version is a bit cheaper.
