    Default WOT: XLR Volume Pedal

    Hello,

Does anyone know of a volume pedal for use with balanced cables?

    I use MiniFlex 2Mic products that are phantom-powered using a TRS-to-XLR cable.
    See here: Model 7

I am aware of this: XLR Volume Control, but would prefer a pedal-based unit.

    Thanks for any assistance.

It sounds like you want to put the volume pedal between the mic and the preamp. You do not want DC passed through any volume control. The proper place in the chain for a volume pedal would be AFTER the mic preamp, between it and the converter (I assume this is to work with a SAC mix rig). For example, the Presonus Digimax FS units I use have insert points between preamp and converter for each channel. The insert is a single TRS jack, and therefore unbalanced. Behringer once made a volume pedal that might possibly work in such an application (I have one, but it is adapted with an Arduino computer for use as a midi expression pedal).

If your preamp/converter box doesn't have an insert point, get a decent outboard preamp, feed its output through the pedal, and that to a line in on your converter box.

    Cary,
Thanks for the reply - though a bit late in responding...

I am currently using an ADA-8200..so no insert points here.

I am told that a BOSS FV-30L would work...

You can't pass phantom power through a volume pedal. At best you'll shut off power to your mic, at worst, you'll short out the phantom power circuit on the preamp.

If you want to control the volume your going to have to adjust it on the mixer. If you want to do that with a pedal, you'll need to do that with a MIDI control pedal mapped to the volume control on the mixer.

    Hello,

Thanks Philip - and others for your assistance.

"Bummer man" - as Bill Paxton would say.

I will look into the MIDI route - just not sure I want to go that way at present.
