Default Next in the queue - tenor saxophone - same question.

I'm recording a sax. What are the favored mic types and placements for various situations?

This particular session is going to be an overtrack on a rock song in a predominantly (and rather intense) drum part (the recording of this came out rather nice - in part, thanks to you guys).

I'm not implying that this is the ONLY way to accomplish your goal, but I use a U87 at chest level or a bit below, around 3' back from the instrument. I don't recommend mic'ing just the bell. The distance from the sax depends on your recording space of course, so be flexible and use your ears. But this is a good starting point IMHO.

I have also used an AKG 414 or a Sennheiser 441 on tenor sax.
