Thread: Time code

  1. #1

    Default Time code

In the old days we would stripe a track with fsk time code.
Then we would read the audio fsk and sync external devices.
Will saw read sympte directly and would I need a converter?

    Application:
A lighting controller without timecode ability.
It will play an audio track.
If I could record audio sympte then play the controller timeline back and read it from SAW and playback Video - Audio in sync.

Much easier to just use SAWStudio playing back video on the video track and multichannel audio in the MT... the sync will be perfect.

As far as dragging the lighting console... most will accept midi commands... so you can use the Control Track in SAWStudio at the same time to send midi program or control changes to have the lighting console change lighting scenes.

    No need for Smopte... or...

SAWStudio can generate Smpte or MTC code to allow external devices to chase and sync...

Or SAWStudio can chase MTC code (Smpte if you use a Smpte converter box to MTC).

Hi Bob, if you playback DV video thru the firewire port from SAW there will be a delay in the decode process to analogue, is there a way to allow for this or do you just manually set an offset?

There is an offset adjustment in the video viewer to compensate.

And you can set this by eye until it seems right, or you can get really geeky like Michael and I have and buy a Syncheck II to get it perfect.

If you use the Overlay render or the new Extended Monitor render, there is no delay on the output video stream and any VGA port can be used to feed most projector systems.

There is a Firewire advance control in the viewer to adjust for firewire output delays.

What you have to watch out for is the processing time delay in some display systems. The double monitors on the side of the Cabaret Theater (across the street from Heinz Hall and the Benedum, beside the O'Reilly, in front of the Byham...) is used to display video ads for events coming to those theaters. There is almost a half second processing lag, putting the audio well in front of the video, without compensation.
