Midi Device Setup?

I have noticed that without setting up devices in MWS and having MWS closed I can still play my VST's using my S80 as controller.

In the MT Option Menu I have not selected a device either.

When I open up a VST synth and goto port input I see my USB 1x1 input, select it, go-live and I am playing.

I understand that you setup you midi controllers like Mixer controllers up in the Options menu.

My question is: Say I have just installed SS, a Midi USB 1x1 interface and some VST's, I do not have MWS.

All I have to do is open my VST select input and go-live to play it?

Yes, you can play and record VST synths live within SS... the MWS adds the ability to record and edit midi data instead of forcing a live performance.
