There appears to be audio compression settings in Compressor that can be turned off for DVD creation as illustrated here:

Thanks for everyone's thoughts, and the link to the Larry Jordan thread. Frustratingly, when we followed that through, it resulted in a disc that contained audio and video files, but was not 'playable' in the conventional sense.
We've now spoken to the Apple Store where, shall we say, they didn't seem entirely engaged in addressing the compression issue - and were not interested in discussing the Compressor program at all. (Basically, as far as the audio side of FCP itself is concerned, the response was 'That's what the program does: sorry if you don't like it'.)
So now we're just looking for an alternative program that will create the necessary files to send to DVD, but without squashing the audio content. (Yes, I know DVD is very much 'last decade' technology, but there's still plenty of interest in the physical product from 'low volume' customers!)
With thanks again
John
Perhaps these sites will help...

Lots of interesting stuff in the recommended sites! In the meantime, we've found a successful 'workaround' for the current project, which leaves both us and the client happy.
Thanks again to all who've contributed their thoughts.

John, there seems to be some confusion of "data" compression with "Audio" compression. You/some replies, seem to use the two interchangeably in the thread.
The affect you describe (12 db of compression) is an audio compression affect you are not wanting.
The 'Data' compression (used for making audio files smaller for use on DVDs - ) is a whole different matter... and different side affects - depending.
I don't have FCP, but I wonder if they have a default limitor/comp. in the final bus stage for protection.
DVD architect (which I do have) may have the same - but I've not run into it there (yet).
