Default New install freezing for buildmixes

At first it was showing progress when doing buildmixes, but now it stays frozen at zero. In either case clicking on the progress indicator or elsewhere in the interface whites everything out and prompts me to close the program or wait. If I wait, so far, buildmixes do complete. And when they do, SAW returns to normal (no more whiteout). So I guess I can keep working, but I'd like it if it didn't act up like this.

Currently set to Run As Administrator. No compatibility mode set. Noticing XP is no longer a choice! But Vista is. :P Just tried unchecking Run As Administrator; same result.

    Ideas?

    Dell Precision 7560
Core i7 of some recent vintage
    32 GB RAM

Maybe. What the hell is that? LOL.

This is embarrassing. This is a recent acquisition, this laptop. It's just now occurring to me that in my haste to get it set up to get out of town, I haven't done any Windows optimizations. Hmmm...

I meant all that windows stuff we used to have to disable/turn off that otherwise was sort of appealing to look at.... I don't remember what it's all called anymore - transparency of window borders and such...
